What Hurts? Mid Back and Torso Pain

Mid-back and torso pain can hinder your ability to move, breathe, and perform everyday activities. The thoracic spine and ribcage are essential for posture and organ protection, but poor posture, muscle strain, or rib misalignment can lead to discomfort.

Common Symptoms

  • Tightness or discomfort between the shoulder blades.

  • Pain during deep breathing, sneezing, or coughing.

  • Stiffness or limited range of motion in the upper body.

  • Radiating pain into the chest or ribs.

What Causes Mid Back & Torso Pain?

  • Rib Misalignment: Subluxation or displacement of ribs.

  • Intercostal Muscle Strain: Overstretching muscles between the ribs.

  • Thoracic Joint Dysfunction: Restricted movement in the spine.

  • Poor Posture: Slouching or sitting for long periods.

  • Nerve Irritation: Compression of spinal nerves.

💡 Did you know? Approximately 20% of adults report experiencing mid-back or torso pain annually, with poor posture and muscle strain being the most common contributing factors

Postural Defects and Spinal Curvatures

Postural imbalances and spinal deformities can contribute to mid-back and torso pain, affecting mobility and overall well-being. These conditions alter spinal alignment, increasing strain on muscles, joints, and nerves.

Some types of Postural defects include:

  • Hyperlordosis – Excessive inward curvature of the lower back, leading to compensation in the mid-back.

  • Hyperkyphosis – Exaggerated rounding of the upper spine, often linked to poor posture or conditions like Scheuermann’s disease.

  • Thoracic Scoliosis – A single-sided spinal curvature, causing asymmetrical muscle strain and uneven posture.

  • Double Curve Scoliosis – A double curvature (S-shaped), affecting spinal balance and rib positioning.

  • Thoracolumbar Scoliosis – A complex spinal deviation where opposing curves create additional compensatory imbalances.
